Carter the Artist

Carter’s teacher sent out an email last week informing parents that each 4K student would have a piece of artwork displayed at a children’s art show at WCTC (local technical college) today from 5:30-7pm.

I told Carter about this when he got home from school thinking he’d be excited. He was not. According to Carter he in fact DID NOT draw a picture at school for an art show, was certain that it must be someone else named Carter, and was pretty sure that the people running the art show were trying to trick him. The only reason he wanted to go was to yell at the people for tricking him.

So we arrived at the art show, and Carter’s teacher was there along with the other 4K teachers, and we found his piece of art right away. And what do you know, Carter remembered making it. Go figure! 🙂

Big Boy Bed Update

Monday night it took about 2 1/2 hours for Cooper to finally settle down and go to sleep.  He ended up shutting his door by himself, climbing into bed by himself, and FINALLY fell asleep.  This meant that instead of falling asleep around 8pm, he didn’t go to sleep until 10:30.  I was hoping that this would mean he’d sleep in.  He didn’t.

Yesterday I had to go to Carter’s school for some PTO/Box Top business.  A neighbor was going to watch Cooper for me, and I was going to bring Carter with.  Since I needed to be at school at 2:45 (right smack in the middle of nap time) I was going to try to get him to take an early nap.  This would have been feasible LAST week when he still had his crib, but not yesterday.  I thought maybe since he had 2 hours less sleep overnight he’d be tired, NO SUCH LUCK!  He stayed in his room for over an hour, although he didn’t stay in his bed.  I could hear him playing with toys and moving around.  But as long as he wasn’t crying, I WAS NOT GOING IN!!!

So last night we were driving to Culver’s for dinner (we were going to meet Tim there, and then he was going to take Cooper home afterwards so I could take Carter to swimming lessons), and we were barely out of our subdivision and Cooper was sleeping.  OH HELL NO!  There was NO WAY that kid was going to sleep at 5pm, he would NEVER EVER go to sleep at bedtime.  So I woke him up and Tim managed to get him home without falling asleep.

When Carter and I got home from swimming, I could tell that Cooper was exhausted.  So we brushed his teeth, I rocked him for a bit, and put him in his bed.  He got up a couple times, but finally went into his bed and fell asleep.

So apparently I just have to stop putting him down for a nap in the afternoon (CRAP!), stay home in the evenings so Cooper doesn’t fall asleep in the car, and then he’ll go to sleep in his Big Boy Bed.

And even though he went to bed fairly well last night, he was still up at 3am, standing in the doorway, calling for Mommy.

Cooper’s Big Boy Bed

Carter’s Nursery

This is a picture of Carter’s room (from when we lived in our condo), taken about a month before he was born.  We had purchased the crib when I was only about 3 months pregnant.  The whole nursery was ready to go months before he was born….and let me tell you, I don’t think it was as clean as it was in the picture EVER again.

I’m sharing the picture because today we took the crib down.  🙁  I know that I should be happy, but part of me wonders if I’ll ever be putting it back up again.  (I know Tim would be THRILLED if this were the case!)  Friday night Cooper got his very own big boy bed.

I thought that he would be excited.  Carter started sleeping in a big boy bed (which is actually a regular sized twin bed that is higher off the ground than our bed) when he was about two months older than Cooper is now.  Since we got Cooper a toddler sized bed, I thought that he’d be ready, and I was secretly hoping that it would put an end to wanting to sleep in our bed EVERY SINGLE NIGHT!

Cooper LOVED his new bed all the way home, he LOVED it when we were putting it together, he LOVED laying in it after we finished assembling it, and he LOVED telling his brother to get out of it.  Cooper LOVED laying in it when the lights were on….and that is about where the love ended.  Cooper does NOT LOVE his big boy bed.

Cooper LOVIED his new Big Boy Bed right after we assembled it.

Cooper trying to escape from his room after realizing that he in fact does NOT LOVE his new Big Boy Bed.

Now I knew when we first picked his new bed up that I wanted to put the gate up.  I didn’t want a 2 year old walking around the house in the middle of the night.  I wanted him to stay in his room.  Well, Cooper DID NOT LIKE THIS IDEA!  He didn’t want to stay in bed, and after playing with toys for a bit, DID NOT want to stay in his room.  He stood in the doorway yelling, “Mommy, where are you” for a good half hour (while we hid in the basement), and then proceeded to cry or say “Mommy, we will rock you” (which is “Cooper” for Mommy rock me).  We rocked him, we laid next to him on the floor, but unless he actually falls asleep with us in the room, he will get back out of bed and stand in the doorway.

And you’d think once we actually got him to go to sleep he’d sleep through the night.  OH NO!  Oh no no no no!  He wakes up between 1-2am every night calls out for Mom.  And then if I don’t come, he cries.  Last night I just yelled, “Mommy is sleeping, go to sleep.”  It didn’t work.  🙁

But we are not moving backwards.  We took the crib apart today, moved his toddler bed to where the crib was, and we are going to keep trying every night until he goes to sleep by himself.  (And just in case you were wondering, he went to bed at 8, and an hour and a half later and he is still awake).  I just hope he passes out from exhaustion soon.

My Hot Date

My mom called me late last week to tell me that I HAD to take Carter to go see the movie Hop.  Since we have a bunch of things going on for the next three weekends, today was pretty much the only day we could go.

Carter was pretty excited to go, he hasn’t been to very many movies.  I think he went to Alvin and the Chipmunks (twice), Toy Story 3, and Tangled.  I told him he had to be my hot date, which he didn’t like very much, but after I told him being my hot date involved getting popcorn, he liked the idea quite a bit.

We went to a very early show, at 11:50, so we decided to split a small pizza, got a BIG bucket of popcorn, some fruit punch, and a big bag of gummy bears.

Carter loved the movie.  He sat really well….except when he asked for gummy bears QUITE loudly a few times.  And he drank about 3/4 of our large fruit punch.  Luckily we didn’t have a potty emergency mid-way through.

We got home around 2pm and took advantage of the nice weather that we had today.  We took a couple walks around the block, played bubbles and chalk, and even kicked the soccer ball around.

Spring Has Sprung

Today was such a beautiful day, low 60’s in the afternoon, which felt like the 70’s after a LONG Wisconsin winter!  We were outside without jackets, and I actually has SANDALS on (this is a huge deal to me, since I despise socks!)

We crammed a lot into today.  This morning it was quite overcast and actually looked like it might rain.  Perfect morning to run a few errands.  Carter and I were out the door by 8:45 to stop at school to pick up our latest MarketDay order.  Then I dropped him off at home and ran to the grocery store.  Today was double coupon day at Pick N Save and I saved $55!  I was pretty proud of myself.

On the way home from the store, I had the bright idea that it would be a good day to stock up on mulch at Home Depot.  We saw a sign on Friday night that mulch was 50% off.  So we left home right before 11am and made two trips to Home Depot.  We ended up getting 40 bags of mulch.

We got home from our second trip to Home Depot right around 12:30, just in time for Tim to change his shirt and for me to grab a birthday present out of the closet, and then we were off to McDonald’s for a birthday party for one of Carter’s classmates.  We were at McDonald’s for over two hours.  Both of the boys had a blast, and Cooper was so overly tired on the way home.  I think he fell asleep in the parking lot!

When we left McDonald’s we realized that it was a beautiful day out.  The temperature must have gone up at least 10 degrees while we were at McDonald’s.  So we decided to try to get some of the mulch spread while Cooper was sleeping.  And in a little over an hour we had finished the job!  I was pleasantly surprised at what a great little helper Carter was.  He had his little rake and shovel out and helped me spread it out, while Tim brought bags over and dumped them out.  We had a great little system going on.

We came in for dinner, ate quick, and then took the boys for a little walk in the wagon.  After our walk it was back to Home Depot for a third time.  Had to get some dirt for some planters and needed to get new solar lights for outside.  After a trip to Menard’s and finally to Walmart we found suitable solar lights.

We finally got home around 7, gave the kids a snack, let them play in the jumping castle for a bit, and now they are in bed.  Carter is fast asleep, Cooper is still WIDE awake.  He got his very own big boy bed yesterday (more about this later) and it’s not going well.

Hope everyone had a fun and productive Saturday!  It’s suppose to be 74 tomorrow!  Yay!
